After a week of tinkering with a 3D printer I've managed to produce something pretty spiffy looking :)

That's usually a cooling issue, as I understand it; laying hot filament on a layer that hasn't fully cooled yet. Try pointing an extra fan at the print bed, reducing the thickness of the layers, or slowing down the print speed.
That said i've only got limited experience so could be totally barking up the wrong tree with it all.
