Another collar commission. 1 1/2" waved collar that was custom fit. It was built to look like a feline tail, stripes were cut out by hand and the red is a soft suede backing.
Simplistic look, incredibly difficult to make and fit to the wearer (yes im bitching)

Yea, I am familiar with serpentine collars,
you need to make yourself a template, needs to be about 3 ft long.
You will need a cpl ppl, I have 3 templates to do mine with S/M/L
Once you set the peaks and valleys it's just a matter of wapping it around their throat to set it, then marking where they meet to get the length, then lay it out, trace, cut, you're done......
Take a look at my gallery....

Good Gawd, why 10 oz leather is what we use to make saddles, and belly straps.........what are you trying to restrain?
And why veg, unless it's becuz of wanting it dyed, the oiled hides used to make chaps out of is plenty strong, it's about 5-7 oz, it's going to be more pliable, and will last just as long, if not longer, and since the suede you are lining it with is a chrome tanned hide anyways, it won't irritate the skin.
how much room did you leave at the edge, the pic is a bit grainy, looks like only about 1/8 inch on each side, how did you attach the backing? if it were stitched the suede would have added to the overall strength.
Also if you wrap the edges in a braid, you can attach the two peices of leather to add for strength while adding to it's visiual appeal..

its more about the math behind the mass of leather that's still there. 10oz with about 60% cut out gives allot of places for failure.
and veg tanned is primarily used when i do a distressed bison base dye, not to mention that it has more stretch and give to it when its under strain. It also kind of falls to personal tooling preference.
clearance on the snaps 1/2" by request, and of course no stitching by request as well. So to counter and reinforce I used the same adhesive that i use for my 3D embossing work which is made locally and to be honest im not overly sure whats in it, but its plyable and doesen't degrade from heat or moisture.
On this particular project I did not have much artistic control, it was specified almost to the smallest detail. Its all about making the commission request exact ^^

Yea I know all about following specs......"Oh boo hoo, why did this fail" ......
Well you see dear customer, you are not a leather worker, and I warned you that this would happen, but you wanted it your way......
Yea I saw some of your tooling....I used to teach that dragon to my students...How do you like the book it came out of?
I understand what you mean about the stretch of the veg, whic is why I asked.......unless it's completely sealed it will either
A, stretch when pulled on after moisture soaks in.. ie....sweat
B. soak up the salt in the sweat and crack...
I am assuming you know what you're doing ant it is sealed.
How long have you been working with leather??

Oh yeah its sealed, 4 applications to be safe.
And yeah, thought the dragon was a decent fast craftaid to show the embossing technique. As far as how long, roughly 8 or 9 years, with a 1 year apprenticeship under 2 different master leather workers.
My take on commissions is more, If you want it that way ill make it that way, but this is what can go wrong, you have been warned. And if they want to keep the same idea after being told what could happen with it, than by all means. I don't charge much for repairs as well lol.

that's where we differ, I rape those that get repairs after being warned....
I have been working leather now for going on 11 yrs, I was the manager of a Tandy Leather Factory for almost a year here in Phx. before I went out on my own...I worked as an apprentice to local saddle maker while he had his shop out here, tho he had to go back to Wickenberg...
