There were, but they didn't have modern rare earth magnets. Before the introduction of valve amplifiers, or on receivers which were too cheap to have one, headphones were the only way to listen. They predate loudspeakers in radios. Early headphones really consisted of two telephone speakers and a strap to hold them in place.
