“I don’t know about you guys but the WOLF has got you beat by a mile!” Gloated Aleu. A.J. turned his head and raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse Me!?” A.J. replied. “I don’t mean to bust your boiler but the GFRR I think is the one who’s got you beat!”
“Oh Really!? The WOLF has trackage stretching from Florida all the way to Nome buddy!” Aleu said smiling.
“True, you guys almost have the U.S. exclusively to your selves! But us Narrow Gaugers’ go where the BIG ROADS can’t or wont!” A.J. shouted. Aleu began to laugh.
“HA! Really? Have you seen the mountains in Alaska!? They make the Rockies look like open prairie! Plus we get twice as much snow!”
Now it was on! A.J. and Aleu continued to debate! The pair continued to have their “friendly” argument and they became somewhat a form of entertainment for the other patrons in the Creamery. Each other’s pride for their own road fueled the debate further!
Soon two more Railroaders entered the restaurant. Both were Depot men stationed in Wolf Creek. One, The Station Master, worked for the WOLF and the other for the GFRR. They saw A.J. and Aleu disputing and quickly intervened.
“Hey Now! What’s this all about!?”
Said the Station Master steeping between the two Engineers. A.J. and Aleu paused a moment and then they looked around the dinning room. They both shown awkward smiles of embarrassment.
“Sorry Chief, I guess we got a little carried away." Apologized Aleu.
“A little? You’ve got the whole place starin’ at ya’! Now what started all this?” Asked the Station Master.
“Well it kinda started as a joke. It started when A.J. was explaining to me what Rail Fest is and how the GFRR’s workers compete with one another. And then we started talking about who’s road is better." Aleu finished.
“Uh huh. Mr. Davis, is that the case?”
“Uh Yeah, that’s sounds about right.” A.J. replied timidly.
“Though in this case I think I’ll agree with A.J." Spoke the GFRR man. The Station Master Turned around and looked eyes with him.
“Well I agree with Aleu!” Said the Station Master. And now the whole argument began again, only this time between the Station Master and the GFRR Telegrapher. A.J. and Aleu stood back not knowing exactly what to do. Leach and Fiesta just sat, eat their food, and enjoyed the entertainment. Aleu dropped her head and covered her eyes.
“Did we look like that a few minutes ago?”
“Yeah, pretty much.”
The two sighed in unison. Then A.J. then suddenly lifted his head and his ears perked. Then her turned to Aleu and said;
“Hey! I got it!”
A.J. said with a smile. He walked over to the bickering Railroaders and tapped them on the shoulder.
“Hey guys! I think I know how we can settle this.”
Said A.J.
“Really, so how do you suppose? Like men? That’s just uncivilized!”
Said the Station Master. A.J. then pulled out a copy of the Gunpowder Gazette, a local news paper based in Gunpowder Falls
“We’ll settle it during this!”
Said A.J. showing the front page. The Station Master took the paper and skimmed over it. It was an article about Rail Fest. It highlighted the events from last year and spoke of what might be this year.
“It’ll be the first time we’ve ever faced a completely separate Road if you can join in!”
“That’s a Bloody Brilliant idea!!!”
Said the GF Telegrapher. The Station Master had an intrigued look on his face.
“Hmmm, this could be an interesting event.” He said.
“Well, there’s still at least three weeks left until then so pitch the idea to you Higher Ups. And we’ll settle this once and for all!”
The Station Master shook his head in a pleased manner.
“Alright, let’s give it a shot!”
Said the Station Master and put out his paw. A.J. took it and gave him a good firm hand shake. Then he turned to Aleu and smiled.
“Well, it looks like your going after all!”
“Looks like it!”
She replied. The both put out their hands and gave a good firm shake and looked into each other’s eyes. The friendly rivalry has begun.
