He looks more demoralized. Maybe he found out he's going to be paid in goods rather than gold. Hard to justify slaying a monster when you'll be paid with a wagon full of potatoes instead of the gold you were promised. It's okay, big guy. We all have those moments where we don't get what we were promised.
