Frustrated by his mother's doting Sebastian flees to the garden. He know she'll be there, she's always there. He noticed she loved roses, so it wouldn't be unfounded to believe she'd be there today.
He blushed when he saw her, sitting among the roses barefoot as usual. She looked to him and smiled.
"Can I hide here a moment?" He asked her.
"You're mother will scold me again if she finds you here." She said as he moved toward her and sat on the ground ag her feet. She plucked a rose, crimson red.
"But you don't really care about that. Do you, Madame Luna?" It was more of a statement than a question. Despite how often his mother would yell, she never seemed all that apologetic about whatever it was she was being scolded for. He wished he could be that fearless, however every time his mother was cross he always felt bad. Luna chuckled as she sat next to him.
"No I suppose I don't."
Why does she hate you?" He asked. Luna thought for a moment, twirling the rose in her clawed hand.
"Because I am an opportunist." She answered. Sebastian scowled.
"So is my father, yet she married him."
"My what dry witt at such a young age!" She laughed, teasing him. Sebastian felt his face grow hot.
"Don't tease me...." He said.
"Very well." She said then paused. "So, why are you hiding in the garden then?."
Sebastian huffed and crossed his arms. "My mother is too smothering. When she isn't scolding me for being within the same room as you, she's making me pose for portraits, having me accompany her while shopping. It's suffocating."
"That's how mother's are."
"I'll be a man in a few short years. She doesn't have to act like I'm a child." He pouted.
"You could be a hundred years old, and still your mother will always see you as their child. Poor and defenseless." Luna told him. There was a hint of sadness in her eyes as she looked at the roses.
"Does your mother do that?" He asked. Luna looked to him and was silent for a while.
"She did." She said, then paused again, "she and my father aren't with me anymore, sadly though. They died some years ago."
"I...I'm sorry." He mumbled. Luna laughed and patted his head.
"Oh there isn't any need for that." She said, then added as she stood, "I'm going to go, before your mother finds you here with me again."
"I suppose I don't want to be scolded either..." He admitted. "I still don't understand why she won't let me within the same space as you."
"Forgive your mother her worries.." Luna said crypticly, "there is much you don't understand. Your mother only wants to keep you safe."
Luna then left the garden, tossing the rose away. Sebastian caught the clipped flower and watched as she left, all while wondering what his mother could possibly be protecting him from.
