“Dear Diary…
I barely had enough time to enjoy my recently awarded Dickin Medal when I received orders from my superiors to go and whip some of the new recruits into action. So I hopped aboard the next train to Kansas to take me to the training grounds at Fort Barkley.
On the way, I bumped into a friend of mine I've known since our puppyhood, Sparky Dachshund who just recently had been promoted to Staff Sergeant. By coincidence, he's going to be joining alongside me once we arrive at the camp. As much as I'd like to help out at the fort, I’d rather be lounging around at home and playing fetch with my little pup, maybe even give him a good belly rub. But orders are orders.
Who knows, maybe on my time off, I’ll go visit some friends overseas. ”

The Barking First is a play on the nickname given to the 1st Infantry Division who call themselves The Fighting First, and Fort Barkley is a reference to the real-life location of the division's home fort called Fort Riley in Kansas. I just figured they'd be appropriate given the canine theme.
