When I was developing Lumi, I sort of went through multiple creations of him before finalizing on one specific instance of what brought him about, and to the new world he is in. However, one alternate timeline/universe version of him always stuck out with me, and I wanted to elaborate on it a bit more still!
I commissioned
pheonixbat to draw out my lovely guardian spirit boy split between a magical seam within his realities, thus the one on the left is the Lumi everyone knows and loves, being playful, energetic, and happy. The one on the right is the alternate timeline Lumi, scarred, worn, but still pressing on even in dark, destructive times - fighting for what was once his homeworld and place of creation.
The Spirit Tree of Nibel is visible on both sides, yet they both show different outcomes - one is pure and thriving, while the other eternally burns with the world itself. The events within AU Lumi's timeline culminate to the burning of the Spirit Tree, or the "Great Inferno" as it is seen as by spiritual scholars, as the life cycle of Nibel was ultimately disrupted and broken by maligned, corrupted guardian spirits.
Lumi fights a constant battle with them, brandishing his own weapons, armor, skills, and prowess to try and find a means to restore Nibel to its former glory, though he may ultimately be stuck in a time where Nibel is lost to the ever-raging fires produced by Mount Horu. For all we know, he may never find a way, but the noble one holds onto the slightest ray of hope - hoping to one day bring it about.
He assists other, lightened spirits still for places of shelter, care, and some form of payment for his actions which they bestow to him despite him rejecting it. They live in Nibel still, but are scarred much like he is, living in large, underground burrows beneath the spirit tree where energy still flows despite the destruction and conflagration of the great tree, while others live in harsher conditions due to having no where else to reside - having to ward off the corrupted spirits and the altered ecology and wildlife that seeks to slay them all as they believe the light spirits are to blame.
This all leads to something eventually...

Lumi belongs to me.
