In the apocalypse, technology is rare. Seeded throughout the remains of the United States of America are places where advanced technology survived. Lost in the aftermath of the war, they represent the key to who will determine the wasteland's future.

Years after the end of the world as we know it, and she still gets spam in her e-mail in-box! Lucky girl. I just hope she's conservative with when and how she uses that laptop. Recharging the battery is gonna be a pain in the butt! It's nice to know that there are still some last vestiges of the modern age for people in her world to cling to, though. Something like even a simple GPS might be invaluable in navigating the wastes - assuming there are still any working satellites in orbit, of course. And with so many people storing so much in the way of photos and e-mails and personal items like that on their computers, having access even just to the things you have saved down would be a link back to your old life as well, and maybe even give you a sliver of hope for the future.
Oh yeah, her computer is definitely a rare commodity in the post apocalyptic wasteland. Given that it's only set 6 years after as opposed to the hundreds seen in some settings the technology is still in good shape, and some areas can only be accessed by someone with Rakell's particular skill set. Indeed, while the majority of the population does not have access to high technology those that do definitely find it useful. The struggle to control old world tech plays a large part in the narrative.
Hah, even when you're traveling through a burned-out post-apocalyptic wasteland, you still have to pause for juuuuust a moment to check your e-mail. Funny how such fragile tech always seems to survive after the end, but maybe, with a little luck and some cunning lads and lasses like Rakell to nurse these old machines back to health, the world will have some kind of hope for a better future. I just hope she's got someone watching her back at this particular moment!
More than likely she is trying to get an electronic lock to disengage. She is a rare computer expert that knows her way around advanced technological systems, having worked on them before the world fell apart. :) Indeed, the remaining technology is more critical than ever to who controls the wasteland.
