I did a portrait for my friend https://twitter.com/KoidelCoyote and I used it as an excuse to try and get some more traditional oil/acrylic texture and brushwork. I like the end result! I think it looks almost like a real painting haha.

I used something called "the magic canvas" that comes with the MA brush pack. It's pretty simple actually, all it is, is a light canvas/noise layer and ontop of that various "impasto" layers that are just layer effects with bevel and impasto, but they have a painterly impasto texture, so this means while I paint on the first layer it has that layer overlaying linen/canvasy noise but when I paint on an impasto layer it has the effect of paint coming off the surface because the layer is activated with brush strokes. I have a few layers of these, each thicker and slightly different than the last so I can actually paint in the impasto texture where I want it to be! if the whole layer was activated it would just look like an overlay type thing, but since its brush activated I can place the texture where I want it to be with my brush, in the direction I want them to go! I combined that with some oil paint knowhow, like painting with thicker paint in the highlights and adding more detail in the light, etc to place those textured brush strokes in the right spots to look more traditional.
