Digimon gets creative sometimes in how their heroes and digimon work. Tamers got biomerge digivolution between the human and their partner, Frontier has spirit evolution that's straight up transformation, Savers got the bioevolution enemies that had humans with digimondna mixed into them.
Yeah, this could be a new digimon series, with the man cast 'cursed' with some digivices. Maybe the villain of the season tried using digivices to make an army earth side to rule both worlds.
Picture the arc structure: The first few episodes being a twist, with the heroes and enemies already working from the ultimate level to fight back for humanities sake, before something twists to put the action on the digital world side, only they lost their mega power and have to work their way back up from their rookie forms before it ends with them breaking the curse and gaining control over transformations.
