Another Type 9 commission, this time for
kotarain, [1/3]
They asked for a round of concepts for protective masks to be mounted on their helmet design. Since we apparently both share a thing for Halo and Titanfall style designs, this (and the following two) came pretty naturally.

I imagine you can spot soldiers out of uniform from permanent kinks long term helmet wear puts in their ears. In my setting you can spot the power armor soldiers when out of uniform because they have to shave their tails for practicality's sake. Calling them "rat tails" is a tried and tested method of starting a bar fight. 83
I like that xD
And yea I could see that effecting some species more than others in my story, the military organization is a huge melting pot of different races all joined under one banner.
And being military for 6 years yea, they can leave permanent marks here and there on your body.

Some of these have a "visored" look that seems like it would create a shot trap around the eyes. I think a more streamlined design would eliminate that, though obviously it would lose the eye shade.
Edit: Oop, I just realized the helmet and respirator are not of one piece. Disregard. I do have to wonder what happens to this soldier's ears when he puts the helmet on, though.

Ahhhh My old field of college study. Industrial design. Or, how to make sexy toasters. You approached this pretty well and they designs all make sense. Anthro Helmets are a bitch though if you have multiple species. (Huge logistical nightmares in that direction), but if you only have a couple it becomes manageable. Tiem to break out your cold gray markers, and see what these look like with lighting.
Heh, funny that, I did that too. Ended up leaving though due to personal differences with management.
I've had to think on the topic of multi-species helmets several times and I never came to a satisfactory solution, especially given that you wont just have to take into account different muzzle shapes, but body sizes and proportions aswell. Thinking about it though, this might be a good direction to take a sci-fi story >_>
I've never actually done grey markers, much to my embarassment ... or rather, the times I've tried have turned out shit <_<

Oh man, gray markers were fun. Still are. You just had to treat them like watercolors. Lightest to darkest, and allow layers to dry if you want a sharp edge. Yoshiharu Shimizu was the master teacher of the technique and I have his books, but Photoshop ended that, and the books are out of print. You can do this in Photoshop, choosing the right brushes (though Clip Studio does it better).
