also - in Russia during the era of which you speak, the tractor was held up as the representation of all that was good. I know this from interviewing an old fencer, and during the Olympics, he shared a bus with the Russian team to the venue. The slapped him on the back and told him, 'You fence like a tractor!' He took third in foil, and only later found out what a wonderful compliment it had been.
