After a year, I've made something finished, and now with a non-mustelid! It's a picture of my partner Kizahn saying hello :)

I've been wanting to try to make something finished that was painted rather than cell-shaded, and this is the result! I definitely learned a lot on how to deal with configuring brushes to do what I wanted while making this. Studying photography and how to take decent portraits has really helped me get a feel for how things should look once going in to colors and shading; for those learning like me, I highly recommend looking into guides / videos on taking portraits using cameras.
