I have to make a confession: I like dragons. Yes, I know, you didn't expect this from me; I am kinda shocked about it myself.
Anyway. Maybe you're familiar with "The Hobbit" from J. R. R. Tolkien. I have to say, I didn't like the book too much. The plot and narration weren't really to my liking. The worst of all this, though, was that the big bad of the book, Smaug the Magnificent, wasn't even defeated by the main hero of the book. No, a character who was made up in one chapter stole Bilbo's spotlight and defeated Smaug in an anti-climatic battle. Meh.
So, a friend of mine just told me a few hours ago that he is reading said book. This inspired me to draw this three-page comic strip. The line art in this isn't too professional since I didn't ink the lines before colourizing. This comic was born from an impulse, and I wanted to finish it as fast as possible before I lose the spirit again.
Ah, yes, and to any The Hobbit fan out there:
Just because I didn't like the book that much doesn't mean that it must be a bad book. This is not meant as an insult or anything ;3
Enjoy the comic.
I do neither own Smaug the Magnificent, nor bard the Bowman or the town of Dale. I do own the art and effort, though, so please do not steal.

Oh no, of course not. I would never do something like that. That's gross. And you should definitely not look into the keywords and check the entry between "church" and "smoke, because there's nothing there". :P
And the flames.... well... different people like different things, and even very uncommon things, I guess oO

Hilarious comic, nice work!
Yeah, Tolkien's Hobbit was not the fantasy epic LOTR was - it was a kid's tale made for kids (his kids, actually). So it's more focused on adventure and hijinks, and leaves the hero stuff to the boring generic hero - who is just as developed as any Disney fairytale prince in shining armor (IE: NOT at all). The dragon had to be written out of the picture and so Bard was invented to do the deed.
From a narrative standpoint, it would have made more sense to have Thorin do it, and that's why I am glad the new movie did have the dwarves at least try to kill Smaug instead of hiding in the cave like in the book. But, Bilbo? I doubt he would or even could have done the deed, and frankly it wouldn't have fit his character - saving someone or himself from peril, yes, but assassinating a sleeping dragon... would have been as wrong for his character as killing Gollum.
The new movie also made it a point to build up Bard better, and emphasise his ( existing in the book, but vaguely) relation to the lord of Dale who failed to kill Smaug back when he attacked. We will see how the fall of Smaug will go this december, but until then, I enjoyed this funny version of the tale!
