Dressed in his multi-pocket coat now filled with koi, Bob set off into La Poudre, the Headwaters of the Great ʼHakhwata. This was the culmination of Bob's entire quest for nearly a year. He could feel his carp rejoicing. The Eastern dragon walked slowly, but surely, making sure that his passengers screwed into the jars were not unduly jostled by his motion. Grass gave way to mud, then water. One step, then another, Bob entered the cool alpine waters of the lake. Meanwhile, Poonence watched in the shade of the van with idle curiosity while Alan dozed off at the steering wheel, a slow drip of saliva running down his cheek.
In a few minutes, Bob was up to his lower abdomen in water. He unscrewed to tops of his fish canisters, then dived in, smooth as a serpent, releasing his fish. With a cheer they swam in with him, a school of fish following their dragon shepherd. In the middle of the pool, they looked at him expectantly.
*Go! See if you can find the Dragon Gate!* Bob told them.
They took off, swimming in all directions. Bob looked around as well. La Poudre was a not an extremely large lake, and it was relatively featureless, and Bob found nothing, not that he could have turned into another dragon anyways. After an hour, the koi came back, one by one, disappointed that they had not found anything. Bob told each of them not to worry, that they would try again soon, and regardless only one could turn every year, before picking them up and placing them back into their jars. Two hours later, and there were eleven back in their jars. Bob idly wondered where his last koi was, for he wanted feed them before getting some rest himself. Then he noticed a single white-and-orange koi swimming upstream out of the lake, and into the rocky canyon creek that was joined with it.
*Hey! Be careful, that area may be dangerous!* Bob yelled, beginning to swim over to fish out the koi.
Suddenly there was a flash, a boom, and then a new Eastern Dragon appeared in the sky, glistening in the morning sun. She was white with orange speckles like that the koi.
*Yay!* Bob yelled in joy.
Thrown awake by the ruckus, Alan ran over to the dragons. *What's going on?* The coyote asked.
*Something amazing!* Bob replied.
Fully attentive now, the underwater panther stared at the scene with mouth agape.
*Sweet mother.* Pooence uttered to herself.
Seemingly floating in the air, the white-and-orange dragon turned towards her old leader.
*Hello, thank you Bob, for giving me the chance to turn into a dragon.* The female Eastern stated.
*Welcome to this new world. What is your new name?* Bob asked her.
*Call me Ana.* The female Eastern responded.
*Welcome, sister Ana.* Bob finished.
*A new dragon.* Pooence muttered, almost to herself.
Alan had been sitting between the two older dragons, staring blankly at the new one. Now he finally uttered:
*And I love her.*

I actually left it open-ended. In my head, it's more an environmental transformation based on friction and temperature, a bit like how temperature, pH and food availability change change the gender of cichlids in Lake Tanganyika, though artificial waterways could definitely play a role as well. I will point out that Bob's pond is quite artificial and maintained as well, and that Bob is not necessarily that bright of a character lol.
