I recently talked my husband into starting a very small backyard chicken flock so we can have fresh eggs. These are my three current girls (well, hopefully they're all girls...the feed store has a 95% accuracy on the sex of the chicks they get in). We might be getting one more later on, after the local breeder is able to tell which of his current brood are hens.
The goldish one is a Buff Orpington named Pot Pie. The lightest one is a Light Brahma named Kiev. The brown patterned one is an Easter Egger named Cordon Bleu, or Bleu for short.
It really is amazing how many small changes come about on all three day by day. Pot Pie's feathers are coming in really fast!

well hopefully their is a male there or you won't be getting many eggs I don't think. I use to raise chickens and yeah we had a rooster or two from some of the bunches we raised. Granted I don't think roosters are necessary for eggs, but it does keep the ontop of things. ;)
those are cute chickens. the brown one probably will be laying good brown eggs which I think are my favorite. :3

Ack, hit the wrong reply button!
The roosters are only necessary if you want to breed your own chicks - hens will lay regardless of whether there's a rooster present or not. Given that we want to keep only a very small flock and don't want to upset our neighbours, roosters are out.
Oddly enough, the brown one will be laying either blue, green, pink or maybe even purple eggs. The other two are going to be brown egg layers though.

but usually white hens lay white or blue eggs. The brown one could lay any sorts. just depends on what type it is I guess. I had a Rhode Island Red hen and it layed brown eggs.
Ahh well also I find that roosters also help keep any hawks, wolves, or any other predator other than humans away..well sometimes they can scare kids away cause their inner leg claws can really hurt when they are threatened.
By the way. If you hand raise them and hold them alot when they are younger they learn to follow you thinking they are your babies. So if you stick with them you eventually can just walk right up and pick them up. They waited when they were older for me. It's really fun.
The other alternative is if you don't handle them when they are young and ignore them they run off and whatnot. Just something I learned when keeping chickens. :)

The white chick is a Light Brahma and they're supposed to lay light brown eggs. Same goes for the Buff Orphington. Since I've never had chickens before, I can't say for sure if this holds true, but I was told that it's the earlobes that indicate the egg colour - red or dark earlobes mean brown eggs, light earlobes mean white eggs.
The coop we're building should be very secure from predators, so hopefully that won't be an issue. Our dog is pretty good at alerting us to when there are strange critters on the property too. Heh...and yeah, roosters can be scary - I was attacked by my uncle's rooster when I was a kid when I was trying to give more water to the chickens!
We're trying to handle them as much as possible (and it's funny, they're "my" chickens but I think my husband is playing with them more than I am!). Bleu is completely relaxed around us, but the other two aren't as sure yet so we're working on that.
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! I'm having a lot of fun with the chicks so far. They're just far too cute!

Ahh I didn't know that. Though I couldn't tell from their earlobes though I never checked. XD
Yeah we had a secure coop too. Fence all around except the top cause their was no real point..tough probably could have been why some of the chickens went missing..maybe hawks could have gotten them. We also had two dogs at the time. Dunno why some of them died the way they did though.
Awesome. Well I am sure the other two will get use to it if you keep it up. Just takes time for some to get use to the new environment and the people that take care of them. :)
Yeah chickens are always fun. I wish I had chickens right now, but I know our German Shepard would be chasing them around the muddy yard we have. Plus we live more in a town and not as much animals around other than dogs and cats. XD
Glad you are enjoying it so far. :D

They aren't old enough to lay yet, but when they do start...yeah, we'll be eating a ton more eggs for awhile! These three should be providing us with 36+ eggs a month once they all start laying...and my husband has actually gone so chicken-crazy that he's looking at adding a couple more to the flock in the near future!
