Multi-line width markers make awesome. That is what I use, broad side for large areas, coloring as quickly as possible so the ink doesn't leave overlap created lines. then use the medium side one to get close to the edges or smaller areas. then flip the marker around to get the fine tip points. I use overlap created by drying to make soft lines with things that have grain, like hair, wood, and sometimes fur. Copic markers, and prismacolor markers work well for this stuff. So I would invest in a small set if you are serious about experimenting with markers. I haven't used any particular place to teach, mostly just time with trial and error.
Yes, if I want it to be clean instead of blurry. Same with the overlaying for hair, fur, and wood grain. The wetter it is when you layer it, usually the fuzzier the lines will appear. Also, at least with my prismacolor, I get weird texturing when I go over a dried darker color with a lighter color, especially light grey.
