though i've never been to your part of the world, i know the feeling well. my dad worked for the railroad over here for most of his life, and we used to ride on his pass. we lived in very small towns surrounded by forest and mountains. there was a train of all mail and express cars with a coach for passengers, who were mostly railroad people going from one assignment place to another, that ran in the middle of the night. anyway we rode that train many times. this was train #21/22 'the mail train'. this was a long time ago, but i remember well being half asleep riding home on it, the 160 miles from san francisco to colfax in the foothills of donner summit, where we lived.
