At one point there were many ethnic enclaves within Wilmington. Little Italy is the last of these to retain its identity. Even if the Italian population has shrunk over the years. At one point the city had an Irish and a Polish neighborhood as well, but as urban decay set in most of them moved further out into the suburbs. This decay has only now started to turn around, with middle class families moving back to certain areas of the city. Little Italy though, has retained its' working class flavor.
