The BG-12s are so common in my area. My college has them in a few buildings replacing older Standard and Simplex pulls that failed or were not ADA-compliant. (There are also many Faraday "Chevron" and Notifier BG-12 pulls on the campus, along with Simplex 4251-20 pulls in three of the 1978 buildings that only replaced their fire alarm panels, signals, and much of the original smoke/heat detectors.)
My friend's university has TrueAlert horn/strobes in many buildings, and TrueAlert speaker/strobes in other buildings. Yeah, they generally prefer to use Simplex, except for several dorms that have EST systems. But from my experience TrueAlert horn/strobes are LOUD. About as loud as the SpectrAlert Advance and the Wheelock AS.
