Short answer: He lost it.
Long answer: He did something stupid in college and learned from it. Boasted to a few classmates he could cast more advanced spells after only just learning more minor spells. They called his bluff and told him to cast a higher level spell handing him a scroll of Arcane Blast 1. He woke up about 3 days later and 1 limb short in the clinic after that.
