To be honest, I like the idea of Rarity missing her chance with Spike, Teaches a good lesson. She treated him like a servant the entire show knowing full well he loved her, hell, she's used her affect on Spike over and over again to get what she wants out of him. First and foremost, it teaches looks aren't everything and are ALWAYS temporary. Second, shows that you just can't hold someone on standby by playing with their feelings; if you don't reciprocate their love, they'll lose interest before you smarten up.
