Cunning, sneaky, persuasive and manipulative, Hatari is a rogue lion who was raised by his mother Kutesa to someday usurp the Pridelands throne. His intense training since cubhood had resulted in the notch in his ear, but he's grateful for his mother's harshness, as it helped shape him into the beast he is today. During his cubhood, Kutesa takes in a female cub named Bia that she claimed to have rescued from some hyenas that killed her mother, and after Kutesa passes away in her sleep, Hatari begins to try for a son with his pseudo betrothed. If he was going to take the throne, he was going to need an heir first.
Their first attempt results in two cubs: a boy and a girl. The female cub was born healthy, but the male unfortunately didn’t make it. This frustrates Hatari, but he figures that he could always try again later and names the surviving cub “Zira”. Once she’s old enough, Hatari begins teaching her how to fight, sometimes training her to the point of exhaustion as his own mother once did. She may not have been the male heir that he wanted, but he figured that she could still be of use to him.
When he wasn’t training his daughter or trying for another litter with Bia, Hatari made sure to learn about what was going on in the Pridelands so he could properly plot a way to take over. He befriends a cobra named Kuingiza to use as a spy, though they initially get off on the wrong foot as Kuingiza ends up attacking Hatari in self defense, resulting in him receiving a scar across his right eye. But once Hatari promises Kuingiza plenty of food if he helps him, he agrees to be his spy and also offers him a treatment for his bite. Thanks to Kuingiza, Hatari learns about King Ahadi’s youngest son Askari, the leader of this generation’s Lion Guard. His cobra friend informs him that Askari seemed to show some envy towards his older brother Mufasa, and it’s with this knowledge that Hatari begins to form a plan. He would befriend the young prince and turn him against his own family, making him use the power that he wielded to aid him in his conquest.
Hatari manages to catch Askari alone one day by pretending to be attacked by Kuingiza, resulting in the young prince coming in to save him. He quickly befriends the young prince, filling him with ideas of grandeur and how he could be so much more than a mere guard with that powerful roar of his. When he wasn’t spending time with Askari, Hatari was continuing to train Zira as well as trying for a potential heir with Bia. She does manage to conceive a litter again, and it’s around this time when Hatari takes the next step in his plan involving Askari.
After leading Askari far into the Outlands, Hatari has Kuingiza ambush him, slashing him across his face and injecting him with venom. Hatari offers to give him the cure for the venom if he agrees to obey his orders, but Askari ends up using the Roar of the Elders in a fit of rage, sending Hatari and Kuingiza flying and falling to their deaths. And while Hatari had been killed that day, his influence on the young prince still remained. He could be so much more than a lousy guard.
Maybe…he could be king.
Hatari is my take on "Strange Lion", the adult male lion who appeared in Scar's flashback in Season 3 of The Lion Guard. Now, some of you might be thinking of saying something like "But Sarah, that's not what happened in the episode!" Well, in my headcanon, Scar's flashback in the Season 3 premiere was mostly a story he made up to better manipulate Ushari to do his bidding. Some of it is true, but the rest was made up by him.
