Of all the places you'd expect to find inspiration, the initial idea for this song came after looking at one of the few furry-themed games on Newgrounds. I was looking through the Reviews section for it, ready for the tidal wave of stupidity that you would expect if you'd ever visited that site, but instead of that, I found a large number of people saying "I don't know if I should admit this, but I like it!" and other rather hesitant but accepting comments. The tune for the chorus was written then, but it took a while to get the lyrics sorted out and to work it up into a full song - the result has a variety of very different sections rather than following one theme all the way through.
So this is about two things: "opening your eyes" into a new but fictional world, and also opening your eyes to respect others - not hating them because of what you've been taught, or because you're scared of being "wrong" yourself.
Additionally, a while after writing the chorus, I realized that some parts of it were dangerously similar to Helloween's "Eagle Fly Free" - so the guitar part for the last chorus is something of a tribute to that.
[Lyrics]
If you had the chance to reinvent yourself
Let go of the memories that remain
Have you ever wanted for another time
To leave the past behind and start again
If you had the chance to leave behind your life
Break free of your primitive dark shell
Craft your every wish of how you want to be
And take on a new form in a new world
We can make you better
Than you've ever been before
Never question why
You will never want to leave
But to wake up from the dream
You must only open your eyes
Overlook the falsehood that you've heard of us
Even though you've hated for so long
Don't you feel a secret doubt that's pushing you
A fascination telling you you're wrong
They taught you to despise
And told you all their lies
But we're here, we'll never let you go
Forget what you've heard
Unlearn what you have learned
The unreal is closer than you know
We can make you stronger
Than you've ever been before
Never question why
You will never want to leave
But to wake up from the dream
You must only open your eyes
Escape the walls that you built around yourself
The constructs of our normal world
Now you can find who you truly are inside
Don't be afraid to let them know
Open your heart
Open your mind
Spread the wings we've given you
And fly into the dream
Sanctuary you'll find
Your body left behind
Ready for the day you're back
If you return at all
Once you have tasted perfection
You will never want to return
Innocence and inhibition left far behind
You will never be alone
We can make you better
Than you've ever been before
Never question why
You will never want to leave
But to wake up from the dream
You must only open your eyes
We can make you perfect
Like you've never been before
You will never question why
But our world is just a dream
And if you wish for your return
You must only open your eyes

Thanks, Kiriyn - I should really think about putting tabs up as this has been asked quite a few times. Unfrotunately the only method I can see to convert them out of .IT with free software is to pull them through a MIDI convertor, then to sheet music then finally to tab... nevertheless, it might be something to look into.
Actually, if you use powertabs ( http://www.power-tab.net ) you can import midi's directly into the tab and then clean them up for playability.
I appreciate that this is perhaps the latest response to a comment ever made on FA...
Nevertheless, here you go! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1242108/ ;)

I was going back and listening to all of My Kingdom again because I needed weaving music tonight...I was so caught up in the amazingness of Unreality that I almost forgot how fantastic your older work is, too. :)
Speaking of, though, I couldn't help but notice that the chorus on this one sounds sort of like a slowed down version of Unreality's title track. Fortunately, I love them both! (I did say the title track was my favorite on Unreality until This Corruption and One Perfect Soul came out, after all....)

You know, it does, actually - I never noticed that, but after playing the two side by side again they do seem to have a lot of similarities! I was more preoccupied with how dangerously similar this one turned out to Eagle Fly Free (and then paid tribute to that in the background of the last chorus) - it makes me wonder if Kai Hansen just has a really tiny memory and actually doesn't realize that he's stealing everyone else's songs. Although I would think that that was impossible.
It's nice to know that you got the urge to look back into my older files, by the way - the oldest by order I actually wrote them are the cyanish ones, from 2003 or so, I think.
