On a more academic note, I've seen this overall art style since the 70s at least: all the models look like they've been carved from dry cottonwood. I wonder at the name of this style, if any...

Well, sorta...
Bebop (the music, not the mutant rhino) got started in the mid-40s as a form of non-dance jazz. Whites for the most part developed Cool Jazz also for listening, at around the same time.
The more-blatant whitewashing of Black American music came during the early Rock-n-Roll years, with rippers like Pat Boone, the Crewcuts and others.
