Huh. Well, I still think the schematic of the main unit's chassis has an uncanny resemblance in it's lines to the pale tank Kusanagi once fought in manga and movie.
I've heard of Black Magic, but it's a lot harder to find than Ghost in the Shell entries. And I don't know if I'd even like it, so I haven't put in the extra effort.

Black magic is a fantasy manga that happens to have a futuristic setting. It's about gods and demons and their machinations. There is (however) a 30 page segment which was the one that was portrayed in the anime with the same title... but they went with the m66 as the main robots which were the ones that in the manga the m-77A uses as training dolls. Rest of the story is similar but there is no damsel to save.
Sooo.... yeah. Lots of changes. Mostly so that it could be more marketable.
