ORIGINAL SPECIES BY ZEHLUA (ZYN BELLS)
Q: What is an oddmadod?
A: An oddmadods is a cross between a bat, a seahorse, a crow, and a cat. There are two types, known as "rare" and "common."
The rare oddmadods measure between 2 and 9 feet tall, with long, noodley bodies and tiny wings in place of hands or front paws. They have catlike faces, batlike ears, and curled seahorse tails. They can have fur, skin, feathers, scales, or a combination of all of those things. Their claws are retractable.
The common oddmadods measure between 6 inches and 3 feet tall. They look like seahorses with crow legs, and sometimes have cat ears and bat wings (though usually their wings are feathered.) They typically have smooth skin and feathers, but some of them are covered in fur.
Q: Where does the name "oddmadod" come from?
A: The name "oddmadod" is based on the words "odd" and "hodmedod"
Q: What do they eat?
A: Common oddmadods love mango, bananas, applesauce, millet, sunflower seeds, berries, peanuts, popcorn, peas, beans, seaweed, cookies, pie crust, worms, fish, mild cheese, butter, noodles, insects, spiders, plankton, and seeded bread (especially rye.) As a treat, they can have a small package of fruit snacks or candy such as a lollipop.
Rare oddmadods mostly eat nightmares and negative emotions, but won't turn down a nice hot plate of shrimp! They also like to eat eggs, squid, and Brussels sprouts, both raw and cooked. As a treat, they can have fried calamari.
Zehlua makes special teardrop-shaped dumplings for their oddmadods, which are colourful and filled with seafood and fruit.
Q: What is their ideal habitat?
A: A cozy bedroom, a garden pond, or perched on their keeper's shoulder.
Q: Where do oddmadods come from?
A: All oddmadods are made in cauldrons using a complicated secret recipe that only Zehlua knows. The first part of the recipe was written by a frustrated alchemist hundreds of years ago with the intended goal of making "perfectly obedient magical minions." Zehlua adapted the recipe to make cute pets, unaware of the remarkable abilities and loyalty they would have.
Q: What are their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses?
A: All oddmadods can breathe underwater, grasp things with their tails, sleep hanging upside-down from their tails or feet, regenerate or reattach severed body parts within 24 hours, get flattened like a pancake with no harm done, collapse their legs like a telescope, fly, and echo-locate. Their typical sounds are squeaks, purrs, chirps, and meows.
Common oddmadods can mimic speech, collect small objects to hoard or gift, build nests, and blow bubbles from their snouts. Their intelligence ranges "from chicken to child," in Zehlua's words.
Rare oddmadods can eat nightmares and absorb anxiety, although this can take them days to digest. Sometimes they have to sleep for up to a week before they're ready for another meal. If they aren't taught the value of fear, they will eat the survival instincts and inhibitions of others, leaving them drunk with confidence and in possible grave danger. Though they can't speak, they make a variety of feline and corvid noises, as well as rattling noises when they're upset. Their intelligence ranges "from cat to college student."
Oddmadods possess undying loyalty to their owner/master/keeper. Their loyalty cannot be broken, only transferred to another person (sometimes a small family.)
Eating the survival instincts of an opponent in battle can give them an advantage if used just right.
They have incredibly resilient bodies, and are almost impossible to kill.
The only way to kill an oddmadod is to rip out or shatter their gemstone heart. If you do, they'll turn back into the cauldron goo they originated from.
Due to their strong loyalty, an oddmadod without a keeper may fade into goo over time from grief.
The perfect predator for an oddmadod is a dragon, especially because they have no innate fear of them.
Without genitalia, oddmadods cannot reproduce (nor do they have any desire to.) The only way to make more oddmadods is by following Zehlua's recipe, severely limiting their population.
Q: Who are some notable oddmadods?
A: Rezinwald is a rare oddmadod belonging to Zehlua. Because he is the first oddmadod ever made, he is sometimes referred to as "Odd Prime." He has the strongest nightmare-eating powers of all, and absorbs Zehlua's anxiety to prevent panic attacks.
Kalooki, a common oddmadod, is Zehlua's familiar and Rezinwald's batch sibling. They were the second oddmadod ever made.
Damien is a rare oddmadod belonging to LUSK, a famous designer from Lungartha, Earth Moon. He is often worn around LUSK's neck as a living fashion accessory.
Snipsnap is a common oddmadod belonging to Captain Dorian, a feared space pirate. She is very bitey, and has been slightly mutated so she can sniff out precious metals.
Tinky is a common oddmadod belonging to an anonymous family in Lungartha, Earth Moon. They hold the record for the smallest oddmadod, at just 5 3/4 inches tall!
