For Stone, I decided to go with a being whose soul was infused into stone and that stone over time became an underwater mountain. The soul then manipulated what stone were there to form a golem-like appearance so technically it can move/communicate. It holds many mysteries, but no one is curious enough to ask the questions for fear of reaching the same fate.
