Hm, interesting! To me it sounds like Gm, but if it's D anything, I think it sounds closer to D Phrygian (minor with flat second). But with that F#/Gb, that pulls it closer to Gm -- or specifically, G harmonic minor.
D mixolydian (flat sixth) contains the note E, which when played over the top of this sounds highly dissonant, which it wouldn't if it were part of the song's key. Additionally, the song resolves to Gm and not D -- and while it's possible to end a song off of the tonic, D just doesn't sound like the tonic here -- at least to me. :P
Though I will admit that there's plenty that I don't know when it comes to theory, so I could be wrong. ^^ It's still a great song regardless.
