Oh geez, this took me forever to do!
But finally after goodness knows how long, I have finished the tutorial on how I make the pets!
I originally made it for my fellow artists at the Hollows, but I figure other people may be interested in it as well. Hope that it will help or at least sate some curiosity. :D
NOTE: I use Photoshop CS3 but I am positive it can be used on later and earlier versions, as well as programs like Paint Shop Pro or SAI having similar capabilities.

Feel free to throw further questions at me. :)

You do that initial color fill just like I do it. It does save a lot of time instead of tracing around with the polygonal lasso. I fill in the rest of the colors for each area by tracing the area for a color and fill it. Then for other areas nearby, I make a selection and go into the neighboring color too. Then I just use the magic wand to deselect the color that I don't want to change. Give ya a nice and tight colors.
Btw, did you know there's a much faster way to color the lines than brushing color on to them? It's a real time saver and I learned it from
holydust It involves a clipping layer.

This is going to come in handy as I just *cough* obtained *coughs again* a full release of Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended v.11 and I really haven't done anything with it yet... I just colored in a sketch from someone else... and that was a dummy run. I don't know crap about the program... this will help. Thanks! :D
I always love to see how other people do things--I learn new ways to do things and make my workflow easier/faster--so thanks for putting this up.
I rarely play with the locking features--I usually just use the control/command click on the lines layer to give me a selection and use that to keep myself within the lines or to clean up when I blur or whatever to outside the lines. FYI, with the Magic Wand you can select the Add option and just keep selecting areas to delete (or the Subtract function if you click the wrong area).
