I have a few different interests, and one of them is newspaper history. While looking up stuff on eBay regarding Scripps-Howard (a now-defunct newspaper chain that once was quite influential), I saw this, very cheap, on eBay (<$5 with shipping included), so I snagged it. The Buffalo Air Derby was sponsored by the Buffalo Evening Times newspaper, part of the Scripps-Howard chain. (The lighthouse logo was the chain's logo.) Interestingly, Air Transportation magazine, in its June 1, 1929 issue, has a different date for the Derby, June 8-9. I wonder if it got delayed for some reason.
Anyway, what struck me about this is that it's the sort of thing that the Spontoon Islands might have done to promote "Speed Week." "Speed Week" was a type of annual air derby held in the Spontoons, and was a very big deal there. I describe it (from Reggie Buckhorn's POV) in "Around the Bend," http://spontoon.rootoon.com/SPwReg06.html. We'll see what the Messrs. Fletcher, Bartrop & Co. have to say.
