The Iara is the Guarani mermaid.
It has a dolphin tail, instead of a fish tail. In other regards, she is similar to another mermaids: she sings to lure men and then drown them.
Accodring to some versions, she can transform into a normal human, with the exception of the blowhole on the back of her neck, which gives her away.
According to some versions, she was once a fierce warrior. Her five jealous brothers tried to kill her in her sleep, but she heard them and quickly disposed of them. Her father punished her by throwing her into the river and drowning her. The fishes revived her and turned her into a mermaid.
She was born of a tragedy, and continues the tragedy herself.
