Doorworm ref sheet collab between me & SpaceFag. She did most of the art (guess which parts I did myself) and I did the text and layout.

They kinda go through "withdrawal" from abruptly not having all those hormones their body's synced up with and aside from that the host would be extremely bummed out emotionally too because their doorworm was nearly a part of their own body in addition to being like a really awesome pet and friend.
But after a short while after their doorworm's died the hosts body starts putting out a "I need a new doorworm" pheromone that kind of attracts "wild" doorworms to them that will make them sort of show up and be friendly to them, so when they're ready and willing they can take them on and become the new doorworm's new host and the cycle begins again.

Doorworms are generally pretty friendly and aren't hard to make pals with.
As far as becoming a host goes, Doorworms start becoming attracted to un-taken Lunarians around puberty when the venom glands in their tails start producing "ATTN Doorworms: host available!" pheromones, and the nearest free doorworm will pounce on the opportunity to get a host.
Doorworms sometimes wont go after a human to become their host unless they're already friendly with that particular human, and/or if they're no Lunarians available. Due to their coevelution Doorworms are biologically predisposed to be more attracted to Lunarians, but at the same time they just think of humans as "people without tails", and their main drive is to find a host, so they'll happily take any sapient being that comes their way, and take an animal host only as a survival tactic.

"...Eyes float via magnetism and communicate with brain via radio waves."
So are they susceptible to RFI (radio frequency interference) and EMI (electromagnetic interference) and if I laid one straight on a bit of styrofoam, would it point to magnetic north? Could they be used to detect magnetic fields? Would they be angry at me if I tried the above mentioned experiments?

Oooh! Cool! However, losing the appetite for meat sounds like a daunting feat, especially for a pure carnivore like myself. *has pointy werewolfy teeth* Does the host lose a complete appetite for meat or is it substantially lowered? Also... *straightens one out and floats it on some styrofoam* *Doorworm does nothing at first, then wobbles, turns, turns again, then points.* "It works!"
It actually adapts their entire system for processing plant based food, it doesn't JUST make them lose their appetite for meat.
out of universe though, really it was just an inversion of the trope where an alien parasite makes someone violent or bloodthirsty, instead these guys make their hosts LESS bloodthirsty. :P
