There is no enemy more hated in Ys-Beneath-The-Waves than the Slavers. They target us, especially our newer sisters, wherever possible, enacting horrible treatments upon them. There are some who feel that we are not at war with the dry world. That changes after they experience first slaver raids. I wish the Merrow luck hunting down these scum.
- Clemence, First Kanterez of the Morgbarzh
The exotic beauty and alluring Song of the Marie-Morgane makes them highly valued targets for Slavers, and they are sometimes captured and sold to rich owners, despite brutal retribution that follows if those involved are caught. Successful Slavers will quickly spirit a prisoner Southwards to the markets of Slaver’s Coast and Iram of the Pillars, Far from the vengeful reach of Queen Ahes. In Iram itself, captives are kept in large aquariums in the palaces of the wealthy.
The willfulness and aquatic nature of the Marie-Morgane makes them difficult to control in the open seas, ruling them out as effective messengers or soldiers. As such, they are usually relegated to aquariums and pools, as far from the sea as possible.
Even as Captives, the Marie-Morgane are not without their defenses, and are sometimes able to escape or even turn the tables on their captors. One intrepid captive, taken as a harem-girl for a rich Ubarite Merchant in Iram, lured her master into attempting to make love to her, transforming him, and eventually the entire Harem, into Marie-Morgane, keeping several servants to maintain appearances while living like a queen in her new palace
Less common than outright slavery, stories have circulated that various parts of the Marie-Morgane, such as tears, fins or scales, are potent magical remedies for a variety of ailments.
The Marie-Morgane are relentless in hunting down these guilty parties, attacking known slavers on sight and without mercy. They have been slowly expanding their reach inland, contracting with Redcap Korrigan or Sending the Merrow to strike at previously untouchable targets. Colonies, such as the aforementioned palace
in Iram, offer support to these endeavors, which has increased the surface world’s awareness of Ys’s existence.
Today's mermaids have not been featured before, Isra, an Ubarite harem owner finding their power dynamic with a captive shifted, becoming the first member in a new harem and Maireid, who turned the tables on her "master".
