It's a known fact conquistadors thought manatees were mermaids. They said they were uglier than the tales would make you believe.
Also, in most mitologies mermans are ugly, hairy and beastly.
I don't think they were ugly. They just couldn't appreciate the beauty of a manly man, or a cute chubby manatee.
