Pogo watches as the Bandicoot explains further the tale of how the shot put fell into his burrow. He's pointing in and calling for his housekeeper to come out and explain matters. It's an unusual composition for Walt Kelly as Pogo was in the extreme foreground for this. That was enough challenge to draw, and I liked having an excuse to draw something with an extra-thick brush.
But I also wanted to take a crack at drawing the Bandicoot's burrow. Have you ever tried drawing a hole in the ground? Without exaggeration I spent more time studying the lines he used to define the absence of material, particularly those three great arcs in the front and the gradual change in the direction of the hatching curves behind it.
