Patch never takes his mask or coat off. Never. Even he hasn't seen the face under it in years. He gives himself a wash in raccoon form instead.

Because he's been living in the woods since childhood, no one taught him how to become a druid and use nature's powers. He gained them over time, "listening to the natural world and feeling its will", as he would describe. But as a teenager, he wouldn't always understand what he was hearing and feeling. Early on, before he could change shape at will, he would transform without expecting it. First waking up in the body of a raccoon without knowing how or why certainly threw him for a loop.
