Tradition has it that on a uniform shirt sleeve, the union (what the US flag's canton is called) is on the side nearer the shirt's front, so that it doesn't look like the person wearing it is going backwards. This means, on the right shoulder, that the flag is displayed right-to-left instead of left-to-right.
