Hey folks!
So drekir are social animals, though they don't form relationships and emotional bonds like humans do. The emphasis on drekir social units is generational and not genetic.
Drekir form den clans, which are generational "family" units that form from drekir who hatch and grow up together (within 3-5 years of eachother). Throughout their lives they will naturally grow a deep and powerful emotional bond.
But why don't drekir engage in marriage? or what about "romantic love?"
I see it fit to explain why that doesn't happen so here is some SFWish reproduction talk.
Drekir are a polygamous r selective species.
by polygamy i mean that drekir do not keep a long term spouse, drekir do not have an instinctive emotional bond with those they mate with and it is natural for drekir to bounce from mate to mate.
by r selective species they are more of a "quantity over quality" species, your average female will lay upwards of 8-12 eggs a year and does not have a maternal instinct to any of their own kids. A mother is not gonna be upset if you say, broke an egg she layed (probably mildly annoyed though). There is a sense of basic empathy but the mother is not going to love or even really keep track of her offspring. With the children it's the exact same, the kids that hatch from those eggs aren't going to emotionally bond nor care about their parents, it's just not emotionally important.
Lastly drekir don't carry an idea of "romantic love". Sexually speaking, when a drek seeks out a mate, it is not out of "love" or "romance". A drek seeks out mates and sex purely as a lustful and instinctive drive to reproduce. And a drek will generally mate with whoever suits their fancy in the moment, could be a denmate, could be a stranger, etc.
So drekir aren't well wired to marry and raise kids, that's now how they work. drekir do not form emotional bonds based on genetic family units like humans.
So they form Den Clans
A den clan forms from a group of drekir who grew up together in the same generation of eggs that were laid by all the preceding adult den clans around them and are practically never genetically related. All the drekir of a den clan are within 3-5 years of age and den clans number between 30-220 drekir.
A denclan serves a lot of important social and emotional roles in a dreks life
A dreks denmates are their closest companions, they emotionally bond with their denmates and to a drek, these are their closest and most trusted companions. A drek will often live and spend most of their lives with the drekir of their denclan, as a drek, these are the folks you would be living with, hanging out with, chatting with and socializing with. These are the people you would trust with your life and the people you would do anything for. Denclan bonds go very deep.
Also drekir see their fellow denmates as potential mates for the occasional fling, remember denmates are not genetically related. Though compared to the human family it's a bit weird. Drekir denmates tend to treat eachother in a "friends with benefits" type situation.
But while drekir don't have a human familial system, they have something that is close to an equivalent in the form of their generational den clans. It's not very human but it's where their closest emotional and social bonds exist. and denclans are the foundation of drekir society

At 8 to 12 eggs a year (presumably for multiple years), they must have either some brutal child mortality rates or some really explosive population growth rates.
Kinda wish the actual art was larger; I'd be nice to be able to make out more of the details. From what I can see, though, the yellow one in the second picture is looking rather worried/nervous at that hatching egg.

It's the former tragically. Not a lot of drekir make it from the egg into adulthood and many eggs just fail to hatch due to sudden changes in temperature in many regions "killing" the egg. comparing it to other r selective egg layers the child mortality rate and egg mortality rate will drop a generation about 30-50%. Even once at adulthood not a lot of drekir survive to their 50s intact. So the high egg rate is mostly to counterbalance the probable and tragically high attrition rate of children in the dragonscape.
As a funny aside, the Sivilao have entire policies about how to control drekir egg laying and many deep pulse drekir nation states have strict laws about laying eggs and even laws about contraception. Generally because once you get out of a primitive society with a high attrition rate, drekir start to have a problem of extreme population growth that has to be managed.
That is fair! I could make the art bigger or post it independently if you would like! I was going for a kinda indifference to mild nervousness at the kid. I think ill start seeing to posting art independently of the dump

I can definitely see having strict laws about reproduction in less primitive conditions! And probably better education about it than a lot of places in the real world, as well.
I'd enjoy seeing the art separately; the individual pictures currently show up as all of about 2 inches high on my screen so its hard to see any details.
