Not sure if anybody reads this series anymore, but might as well throw this small bit out to see. Remember, comments and support is what keeps this going...
Ever wonder how some people in anime have strange colored hair yet it's never explained?
Me neither.
But at the very least, my protagonist's folical alteration will have some sense to it...
Chapter 4 Purple Is the New Black
Outside, I watched the lock-down message on the keypad come up again before I placed the Salandit's soggy padding in one of the plastic bags I carried in my backpack for vendor-foods I picked up on the street that I wanted to save for later. Not sure why I was holding onto the diaper, I admit, weird. Maybe to dispose of the evidence that I was even inside? Maybe as s souvenir of the moment? Maybe as something I could later show him as a reminder?
Getting my pack on, I stared down at the door, noting the little, closed slide-holes, like those ones in prison where inmates had their food given through. I hadn't thought on it before, but I guess they were used in similar circumstances...of a sort. Some Pokemon can get a little violent, and some conditions might warrant it I suppose.
"You weren't IN THERE were you?"
I stiffened without looking at first, chagrining that I figured I would get in trouble eventually. I did turn, seeing Joy and Chansey standing in the hall with shocked looks on their faces. Joy was gaping at me while Chansey was looking a little...uncertain. Maybe she just remembered I knew the lock-down code for the room and felt a little responsible for this.
I didn't exactly feel right lying, so I decided to come clean, well, mostly. I sat down and explained myself as best I could, or at least enough with some emotions in check, and a few omissions. I said I DID go into the room, which was kind of obvious. As for the reason WHY, I couldn't really express correctly.
I simply told them that I wanted to see him. I was...worried I guess. I've been able to see him every day since finding him, that to be barred from it seemed like some kind of punishment. Not from Joy or the others, mind you, but more like from the stuff you call fate, destiny, whatever term you'd use to describe things in life beyond your control. But more than that, I want to see he was alive and well, with my own eyes.
Of course, it didn't go as swimmingly as it was when he was unconscious. Still, I guess that was to be expected. He certainly had a fire within him, and that's not just because he was a Fire-Type. I mean, I hear that some life-threatening things can be boiled down to two halves. One, the expertise of the person tending to whatever damage there was. And two, the will of the person or creature to live. Seeing as how he had been edging to fading away, the fact that I could see him up and about was a relief that he had the will to survive.
Surprisingly, I wasn't scolded as much as I thought I was going to be. Chansey had gone into the room and, I guess, secured the Salandit. Joy had gone to help, but told me to wait for her. When she returned, she was carrying a rather surprised expression. I guess finding the little lizard calm and subdued from something other than just exhaustion was unexpected.
"What did you do?" she asked me.
I bit my lip. I didn't want to bring up the rather...private moment involving me and the Salandit. I kind of felt he would be embarrassed if I brought it up, despite the likelihood he wouldn't find out. Still, I didn't want to betray that, so I just....
"I...talked to him," I said. It was true after all.
"Really? He seemed so...calm," Joy remarked, glancing back at the door. "So different from how he was befo---"
Joy turned to look at me, looking a bit subdued now that the initial crisis, as far as they had been concerned, was over. Her eyes widened in surprise, which kind of worried me. "W-what...what happened to your hair?"
"My ha...oh."
I had neglected the bit about the whole Poison thing. I realized it was stupid to do, I know, but I didn't want the Salandit getting in trouble, especially when, it seems, I wasn't experiencing any sickness even now. But wait---
"W-wait, there's still---?" I began, trying to look up at my hair. I knew I had gotten a spray of poisonous stuff in my hair, but surely it would have disappeared by now right?
"Come with me, right now," Joy told me, taking my hand and nearly dragging me at the start to another room.
"Whhhaaaaa---!?"
My hair was purple! Or at least, nearly all of it was! My brown hair had caked together a bit and changed color! When Joy handed me a mirror and told me to look, I was uncertain what to expect. Certainly hadn't gone bald, ironically like the Salandit, or I would have felt the difference. But a near complete color change!?
"So...he released Poisonous Gas," Joy mused, looking off to the side.
"I-I guess, but it wasn't his fault," I made sure to tell her, gritting my teeth.
"Even so, that seems to be what he did," Joy told me. The fact she seemed less concerned than one would expect made me feel...awkward about this discussion.
"B-but I used an Antidote, so I'm ok and---"
"Being in the situation in the first place was not a smart move young man," Joy told me sternly, making me look away for a moment. "However, doing that, especially so quickly, was the right move. Though, seems it wasn't critically necessary..."
"...what?" I said after taking everything Joy said in. What did she mean, not 'critically necessary'...?
Joy sighed, looking at a chart she had brought with her under her shoulder. "While the Salandit has healed significantly from his injuries, he is still recovering from malnourished. His condition also means that anything he does, especially Moves, is not very effective."
"Not effective?"
"Yes. So, in the case of that Poison Gas, it was actually not that poisonous at all," Joy told me, causing me to slump in my chair with relief. "It might have caused some nausea, but other than that it was quite safe."
"So...so I'm not...?"
"No, you're Poison-free. Still, you should count yourself lucky you weren't burned young man," Joy told, and scolded me.
"That's good. I didn't want him thinking he---"
"You're worried about what HE would think of it?" Joy asked, a little surprised.
"Oh...well I..."
"Hm," Joy murmured, a little smile on her face. "Well, you may not be Poisoned, but there did seem to be a side-effect of taking such a direct attack."
"Side-effect?" I asked, suddenly concerned again.
"Yes. It's quite weird, I've never seen it before," Joy admitted, blinking. "But it seems that, while the Salandit was weak to the point that it's Move couldn't Poison, the production from it's markings, mainly the coloring, was concentrated enough to have an effect."
"You mean...changing my hair color?"
"That's right."
"Jeez," I breathed, looking at my now-purplish hair.
"From what I can tell from the results of looking you over, the substance seeped into your hair follicles. While it seems you can wipe it off your scalp with any shower or bath, your hair will stay that color. It also seems like that whatever new hair growth you'll experience on your head will also be the same."
"Oh jeez...how do I explain this to mom?" I wondered out loud, holding one of my new hair bangs.
"Oh, that's your problem," Joy told me flatly.
"W-what!?"
"Well you DID go behind the Center's back here."
"B-but...!"
Joy left me distressed for a moment, looking a little too pleased with herself, before seeming to grow serious again.
"...aside from your hair, you don't seem to have any other injuries," she said, matter-a-factly. "Which means for at least several minutes, you were in there, alone, with that Wild Pokemon...and he didn't hurt you."
"N-no he didn't," I told her, looking off to the side. "He was just...well, scared I guess."
"I suppose so," Joy admitted, shrugging. "Hm hm, you even managed to get him in a new diaper somehow," she added with a grin.
"Well...he was kind of exhausted I guess," I professed, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Still, I'm not sure how you handled him. But whatever it was, it seemed like you managed to do so quite well."
"...maybe I just got lucky," I whispered to myself off to the side. The room fell silent for the moment, till Joy seemed to decide to close the discussion up.
"Well, I guess we DO have you to thank for it," Joy eventually said, getting up from her chair. "He's secured again now, and we're aware that he's no longer unconscious. To be safe, we won't let him out until he's discharged."
"...discharged?" I asked, looking at her from my wandering glances.
"Yes," Joy replied, turning her back to me. "After all, he's a Wild Pokemon. He may not have hurt you, but he was still rather violent at first. The others on staff are a bit worried about treating him because of that so..."
"B-but..." I started, wondering what to say to change this sudden direction of things for the Salandit.
"You should go home now. I think about another day's treatment or so may be all we have left to offer that Pokemon," Joy suddenly said, still not looking at me. "By then, we'll release him."
I was left in the room for a bit when Joy left, still wondering on this sudden information. The hair thing, I could deal with. Sure, it was weird, having purple hair, and seeming to be stuck with it...but was the Center really just going to put the Salandit back in the wild? Sure, he seemed to be a hot-head (or tail as the case may be), but there was a side I saw that was quiet and content. If only they could have seen that too...
When I got home, mom still seemed to be at work, but Dev was around to greet me. She seemed more interest than usual, looking at me rather suspiciously and sniffing at my bag. With a bit of a start, I realized I had forgotten about the Salandit's diaper in there. I guess I intended to secretly dispose of it so nobody knew I had been in the room with him. But, the cat was already out of the bag...and now one was sniffing mine. I gave Dev a quick pat and headed outside, unzipping my bag and depositing the Salandit's sodden diaper into the container where Dev's went. I didn't think much of it at the time, it's something that everyone does here...but as far as local pick-ups knew, there was only a Liepard registered at this house...not a Salandit...
It wasn't till later, I realized, that Joy may have been aware, or had intuition herself, on what was to follow. The fact that she had informed me of the center discharging the Salandit, reminding me of what I had managed with him, and not being specific as to what (or who) they would release him to.
I was too wrapped up in many thoughts, from concern of what I was just told, to the events of what happened in that room, that I figured to think of something I could do. The obvious was kind of a distant thought to me...
...however, weird as it was, I had gotten just the encouragement I needed that following day. It all started from a very unexpected phone call...
Not sure if anybody reads this series anymore, but might as well throw this small bit out to see. Remember, comments and support is what keeps this going...

I've been reading your whole series I just don't comment on most people's submissions, for what it's worth I've loved the entire story so far while being more of a fan of the naughty version than the clean one. Haven't actually read this yet since I'm about to leave for work but I'll definitely check it out when I get home.
