What can be said about the Groagez, the Arkane Academy of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves...
- Clemence, First Kanerez of the Morbarzh
I would be remiss if I allowed my ... distinguished colleague of that little music school to introduce the most important Arkane institution of our magnificent city. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Ghyslaine, the Archimago of the Groagez, Prime Alchemist of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves AND Bard of the Bronze Coral (Seriously, we can all sing, so anyone can qualify for the Morbarzh. I'd like to see any of those singers properly distill a tincture of Quicksilver). The Groagez represents the finest minds of the Arkane of our people, drawing from a rich tradition of Bediz, Fae and Morgazh Arkane and alchemy. We are in charge of maintaining the sea-walls runes, of enchanting the wonders of the Palace and ensuring that Gardenhill runs. The crystal caverns that let us grow surface foods for the first time? That was us, as are the dancing lights of the Great Hall of the Stormqueen, AND the lights on the bridges between the hills. We keep the Finfolk at bay so the Beg-Sabrenn can focus elsewhere and create the Cohuleen Druith for the Merrow. Certainly, the Morbarzh and my dear friend Clemence keep all the stories together and sing their pretty-little Oceansong, but the real magik? That is the domain of the Groagez.

That they haven't said themselves.

The Marie-Morgane are creatures of faerie, the magik of the Faewylde flowing through them, giving them the ability to naturally utilize glamour and the Arkane at a high level equal to many Sidhe. But for many, this access to magik is sudden and new, with only a handful of individuals being skilled in an Arkane tradition before joining the Marie-Morgane.
The Groagez are the arkane academy of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves, dedicated to mastering and understanding their nature as magikal creatures, and using their gifts for the betterment of the Beacon City. Unlike some Fae, the Marie-Morgane study both Fae Arkane and Bediz Alchemy, scraping together what they can learn of both traditions to further their own Arkane.
Membership in the Groagez is open to all Marie-Morgane since all have a high level of Arkane potential, but only the most dedicated mages and alchemists remain with the group, acting primarily as researchers. The academy has a large complex within the massive sea-walls of old Ys, the magical wards and vast interior serving their trial-and-error spellcasting research well. The Groagez also have a satelitte campus in the Morgazh settlement of deepring, which is the largest official colony of the
Marie-Morgane.
The Groagez is primarily a research institution, but fields powerful spellcasters who serve on the front lines of the Marie-Morgane’s battles against hostile forces, natural disasters and other calamities. They assist in building, farming and many other civil projects and serve in a powerful advisory capacity to Queen Ahes. The Groagez has an ongoing rivalry with the Morbarzh, the guardians of the Oceansong and the two arkane groups fight as often as they collaborate. At the end, however, both serve Ys
without question, trying to learn more about themselves and their home in the magikal waters of Faerie.
Today's mermaid is Ghyslaine, the Mage. Rather than the city itself, Ghyslaine primarily lives under a lake on the Enez Lok, an island that hosts the Kalvar of Ys, a magically significant megalith marking the boundary of the Kingdom of Kernev before the Fall of Ys. Ghyslaine is something of an eccentric of the Marie-Morgane, regularly conversing openly with surface inhabitants on ships or shorelines and always wearing a large and ornate dress, shunning the minimalist and light fashion choices of most of her people. Ghyslaine is also one of the few Marie-Morgane who initiated her own Courtship, actively insisting she be allowed to join the undersea race. Ghyslaine is inspired by the Groac'h of the Isle of Lok, a Breton Fairy Tale collected by Émile Souvestre in 1844 (Although Ghyslaine takes some issue with the veracity of Mssr. Souvestre's story about her and has some suggestions for the story's improvements.)
