Merceau never speaks lightly of his career - he is a traveling mercenary and a skilled sharpshooter; skills that are put to great effect in ending life. He's admitted on multiple occasions that he has no taste for taking life, but he needs to eat and needs coin to travel, so he does what he needs to. This isn't to say he'll take any job... and this isn't to say that he doesn't enjoy showing off his talents. Doing with a pistol which other people can only dream of doing with a longbarreled weapon... the White Death is a nickname he wears with a bit of pride, even if he doesn't like the connotations.
