Varik’s father, Rufus, was born with a huntsman’s pedigree, but whereas his family slew errant monsters for the U.S. government, Rufus Rausch broke the mould and became a doctor who served charitable causes abroad. As a young physician, Varik’s American father joined Doctors Without Borders and was soon thereafter assigned to help stem the spread of endemic disease and supply lifesaving care in Cameroon and the Central African Republic. Varik’s mother, Serah, was born in East Germany to parents of African descent. Shortly after German reunification, Serah and her family immigrated to Namibia which had recently gained its independence from South Africa. In the end, if not for a chance encounter in Kinshasa at an SADC conference, Rufus and Serah may not have met.

Varik Rausch was born in Windhoek, Namibia, where Serah was employed as a systems analyst for the Southern African Customs Union. As a young kit, Varik witnessed life beyond his native Namibia on occasion whenever Serah traveled to nearby Botswana and South Africa for business. This sort of cosmopolitan exposure did not begin and end with these excursions into neighboring states. Though living in Namibia necessitated the need for Varik and his siblings to understand both English and Afrikaans from an early age, Serah Rausch insisted her three children be instructed in German at the Goethe-Institut. The Rausch family lived for the first eight years of Varik’s life here in Windhoek, but it was not long before Serah’s ambition took them all to the shores of Continental Europe.

Upon resettling in Düsseldorf, Varik and his little sister were eventually enrolled in Grundschule while his older brother commenced Gymnasium. While Varik never truly suffered many academic setbacks, the young hyena always hated the overly structured, monotonous nature of school itself. This innate restlessness manifested as an unrelenting need to act out at home and in class if only to get up, move around and remain an active participant in the wider world. This thirst for exploration was further sated when Varik, at the age of twelve, was given the opportunity to attend summer camp in the United States. Little did he know then, but this summer outing at Camp Waxing Crescent would later profoundly change Varik’s life in ways inconceivable to so many.

For you see, Camp Waxing Crescent was no ordinary summer camp. It was where the children from many renowned hunter clans were often sent for assessment, and Varik’s energy and aptitude won him no shortage of approval and camaraderie. Two years later, the young hyena was enrolled at Perihelion, a private academy in Des Moines, Iowa, where those same children were instructed with the goal of becoming the next generation of preeminent monster hunters. At eighteen, Blutmond, America’s technocratic order of monster hunters, deemed Varik Rausch and his associate Rainy Bruder suitable to lead Hadeanstar, a paramilitary outfit of gifted young hunters with supernaturally enhanced attributes. Varik and his peers were given these extraordinary powers upon ritually imbibing a mysterious substance known only by researchers as the "Water of Acheron".

Imbued with the capability to manipulate kinetic energy, Varik Rausch is prepared to lead his comrades in Hadeanstar as they defend their home from supernatural threats. Although, he and those he helps lead must first succeed as college students at the University of Iowa.
