Memorial day 2020
I went to Forest Hill Cemetery here in Madison to plant a flag at my Grandfathers grave. The Office was closed and I had to search out in where I last recalled the plot being. Took awhile but I found him. Plus seeing the unmarked grave of my grandmother next to him still gnaws at me big time. Something that needs to be rectified and sooner than later.
William Henry Groat, 78th Division US Army World War One, and part of the Incursion into Mexico in 1916 chasing after the bandit Poncho Villa under General John 'Blackjack' Pershing.
Can't post photos of the graves of my other grandfather , another WW1 vet, plus my father, a WW2 vet, they are buried in Tucson,

My maternal grandfather served in WW1 in the US Army Signal Corps as an interpreter as he was fluent in several languages. Then enlisted in the Polish Legion to fight the Bolshevicki "so he could have a uniform to return home in". Then finished his years riding a mail car sorting letters. Could write in Polish with both hands simultaeously when writing to friends. Died several years before my parents married. A heavy smoker of unfiltered Camels.
Even though my father was not a veteran in the US Armed Forced he was a veteran of the New York City Police Department of 32 years of service. My father was a witness of horrors that topped anything a soldier would witness serving overseas. I am extremely proud of him and he was very proud of his service to the people of New York City. My father died last year at the age of 86
My direct line was spaced to miss most of the recent big wars, but I have quite a few great-uncles who were in the Second World War. One of them stayed behind in New Zealand afterwards and married a nice Kiwi girl; we now have a branch of the family in New Zealand and Australia. Going farther back, though, there were several in the Civil War, and at least one we know of in the Revolution.
Current generation is trying to make up for that. I was Navy, I've got two cousins in the Army (well, one's retired now, he's in his late 50's) and a couple of nieces and nephews looking into it as well.

May they rest in peace.
I'd hate to try and list all my kin that had been in the Service in North America - some were part of the Militia in the Colony of Connecticut in the 1600s thru the Revolution. Had 3 known ancestors fighting for the Union during the Civil War - other relatives in WW1 and 2 , An uncle in the Navy during Korea and some cousins in Vietnam.
