I love this pose... now someone out there, who's been paying attention might call shenanigans on me. I said this is fencing, but early I said that was a cutlass! Well, yes, that's absolutely right. I just don't care: I wanted to do her fencing, so I did.

That depends on which blades you are thinking about. katana's were about 2 feet long.
You could be mistaking a Wakazashi or Tanto for a Katana.. Unless you are reffering to people mistaking a Tachi for a Katana (2 1/2 feet to 3 feet in length) sometimes called a MK I, and the Katana is a MK II, being as the Tachi came first.
Although.. Some people seem to think a Masamune=A huge sword, wrong Masamune was just a craftsman who folded the blade so many times it rivals anythign MACHINES now adays can do.. These swords they think about are Nodachi.. I say Nodachi cause I can't put that apostraphe ontop of the O, I just dunno how lol.
Katana's actually are Wakazashi's just usually longer, and worn in a different way.. Hehe I've taken Kendo for 7 years.
PERSONALLY Masamune was not near as talented as Muramasa. Muramasa blades are.. God they are so insanely sharp and strong.. I got to touch one once.. Not the blade oh hell no, but god.. It's radiant it just begs to be used.. Kinda like the legend hehe...
I SAW a few of Masamunes blades, I have to admit, they were very artistic and elegant but Muramasa's blades are so sharp still that the blade CAN NOT be handled, not even with chain link gloves!
But hats off to Amanakuni, first swordsman to craft the curved blade which basically was when swords stop breaking all the time lol.

Alright, you know your katanas, kudos to you. You even told me a couple things I didn't know, there.
I'm afraid you don't know the Cutlass, though. This sword ranges between 2 feet to 36". This is an estimation based on the range of specific examples I've found, but a quick search will confirm this.
With swords you must consider that the Europeons were a good deal taller than the Japanese, and this affected the size of their weapons.
