I feel slightly strange putting this up... it feels like there's something missing! This is the first song that I've released after recording it in Tracktion instead of Modplug, though I'll still put the MIDI/tab version up tomorrow. I'm also going to experiment with just releasing songs as I finish them and then organizing them into albums later on, the way I used to when I first started, as it gives me a lot more freedom to write when inspiration strikes.
"Soul Eater" is the first track from the still unnamed album that I'm piecing together at the moment, and it'll probably - but not definitely - become the opener. Its music has been finished for a long time now, but I struggled so much with the lyrics that it took about a month to get it out - either my abilities have left me or I was using a concept that just lent itself to words that were difficult to rhyme. And you can interpret what this means for yourself :)
I still need to work on perfect tuning in Tracktion because it's very glaring if things are slightly off... when it's a human playing a part instead of a computer, the tiny errors are much more obvious. I do like how the solo came out, though, and especially the descending chords into the last chorus.
Lyrics
It's waiting somewhere out there
Where you don't dare to enter
Even though you know that it exists
Feeds on your recollections
Your treasured past reflections
Leaves its tainted memories in your midst
And as it's carried on the light
It's reaching every single life
The images locked in your mind
Can never be unseen
There's no way he can stop this madness now
The shame and the beauty of all
Wrapped in one twisted mind
It's come alive, he cannot turn back now
Your own thoughts fuel his lust for life
I am a servant to the memories
That my own hand creates
Decide the victims, bring them back to me
And by the power of my metal heart
I'll guide them to their fate
The thrill of the chase
Soul eater
One look, your mind's afflicted
And yet you're now addicted
Finding all these pictures from the past
No memory safe from tarnish
As they all seek to find
Destruction of their innocence at last
And as it spreads across the land
More souls awaken to its hand
Until it's reached them all at last
It's taking every one
There's no way he can stop this madness now
The shame and the beauty of all
Wrapped in one twisted mind
It's come alive, he cannot turn back now
Your own thoughts fuel his lust for life
I am a servant to the memories
That my own hand creates
Decide the victims, bring them back to me
And by the power of my metal heart
I'll guide them to their fate
The thrill of the chase
Soul eater
You've seen the spectacle he poured his soul into
Still no one's safe, perhaps he's coming next for you
Can't fight it, can't break it
There's no way to escape it
His diabolical imagination
There's no way he can stop this madness now
The shame and the beauty of all
Wrapped in one perfect mind
And nothing here on earth can stop it now
Your own thoughts fuel his lust for life
I am a servant to the memories

Decide the victims, bring them back to me
And by the power of my metal heart
I'll guide them to their fate
The thrill of the chase
And the beauty of guilt
The will of the world
Soul eater

I think what's missing isn't actually missing. The tracks you use for vocals (being the choir) sound lie their supposed to be in the background to me..they don't seem like vocal tracks any more. maybe you should experiment with different intruments for that.
The arabian/eastern flair you gave at one point was amazing..you should definately experiment more like thlat xD

I'd even say you (David^^) should carry that arabian touch a bit further. I tried to sing it and make up some more harmonies, just because I love vocal harmonies. And at this smaller 4-line verses which are arranged around the dominant chord I'd add harmonies a major 3rd above. That has really a eastern touch and rocks like hell (at least to my humble ears)

You might well be right about that, actually - I think I made the same comment on the work-in-progress version of this, but my ears had got used to the sound by this point (the vocals instrument is, indeed, a modified version of something that would be more suited to a backing choir), though I didn't find a better one in my experimentation. Perhaps an actual vocalist? :)

Great work, man! I liked the Middle Eastern twist you put in the middle, as well - if you get it right, "fusion" music like that can work out really well!
Although, is it bad that the first thing my mind did when I saw the title was bring up the MGS3 theme? "I'm stiiiilll in a dreeeeeaaam, Soul Eeaaterrrrrrrrr!"... my brain is bad sometimes. :P

Thank you! The Middle Eastern section was actually an improvisation, and isn't in the written tab (just now) - it was originally just the rhythm guitar on its own there, but a quiet melody seemed to fit over the top.
And that was a weird moment, putting an honest James Bond title sequence by surprise into a game :) Not that the rest of the series isn't a bit weird anyway... but the brain sometimes makes associations you can't help like that. Similarly, there was a giant sign on the railings outside our church once, for a "Soul Picnic", and I got a mental image of black-cloaked apparitions sitting around a red and white chequered tablecloth, devouring souls with plastic cutlery.

Dear god, it seems like as each of your songs get released, they sound better and better each time. This is easily one of the stronger ones I've heard from you, and it shows. It sounds good and flows very well. My only complaint is that in some parts in the transitions and part of the beginning don't exactly have a full sound, so it sounds a slight awkward at times. But that awkwardness easily goes away the moment something bright sounding (I.E. the guitars or voice), jump back in.
Though I have to admit, if it's in the range I'm thinking of, the only singers I can imagine who could even begin to pull that off would be Tony Kakko or Timo Kotipelto. The melodic line sounds AWESOME, but dear GOD is that high, going up to a high B on one part even all the way to two Es above middle C, near full voice at the end. That is INSANE.
In order for the entire song to blend (and this is true for a lot of your songs), the voice needs to be in the octave you played it, otherwise it goes too dark. Why am I complaining? Because it means if I tried to sing it, most of the time it would have to be an octave lower and then the song just doesn't have that spark you seem to breathe into it. What this boils down to in my opinion: damn, bloody tenors. <laugh>
Either way, look forward to where this almost but not quite entirely unlike an album goes. You have a very nice start as is, I'd say. <Grin>

Thanks as always for your commentary, I'm glad you're liking my music :) Mixing is definitely something that I have to learn, now - I'd managed to just about get a sound that was coherent in Modplug, but by starting from scratch again I had a lot of difficulty getting different tracks to sound separately identifiable in the complete song without "empty" sections when one or more of them wasn't playing. The capabilities of the human voice are something that I don't pay as much attention as I should to, either ;) Perhaps as I try to submit more presentable stuff in this style, I'll be able to improve!

I miss the Modplug NES-style sound as well, and it's a bit of a step for me to say that I'm abandoning it - perhaps I'll have to do old-style versions of these as well, if I decide I miss the sound too much :) But thanks, I'm glad you like it - it's always good to hear, and to have you as a watcher :)

Thank you! It's nice to know you liked the solo section, because that's where the actual "playing" has to stand much more on its own (I still cheat with time-stretching during the faster sections). My personal favourite part is the mini-solo after the 3:14 section - I love how it came out :)

i can appreciate your music because of the melody. it seems to obey the basic rules of music without getting repetitive. other artists i have heard, even more famous ones, either play it too safe and get boring, or they take too many risks with the melody so no two notes are the same... you write really good melodies.
just looked at the keywords. melodic rock/power metal. ah ha! makes much more sense now.
not to be an equipment jockey, but you mentioned Ibanez. that one of their solid bodies or an acoustic-electric?

Thanks a lot :) It's always great to hear that my music's enjoyed.
It's a solid-body one, the RG-350DX. http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuita...../model-RG350DX I've had it for about six months, now, after replacing a cheap second-hand Stratocaster copy.

Thanks :) Getting a good guitar tone is something that I really find that I don't know much about, because the whole sound engineering side of guitars is beyond me as yet... so it's nice to know that people think this one sounds OK :) Should you want to know, it's a custom POD X3 one that I downloaded from somewhere or other, called "Made in Westlake".

Thanks so much :) I'm still learning about recording and getting a decent sound, so comments that I'm doing something right are very encouraging indeed! I've been having a go at "The Edge of the World" recorded in the same way, too, but it isn't really working as well so far... I think I need to experiment with more different backup electronic instruments. More will be on the way, though :)
