I'm trying again to learn how to draw hands. The way my thought processes work, this isn't easy or natural for me. So new techniques and approaches need to be taken.
This is heavily referenced. What I basically did was take a Hogarth anatomy book drawing and copy it exactly. Then I traced my own copy about 5 times, adding and subtracting lines as I went, subsequently deleting each under layer along the way. This has been forcing me to work with my own line quality and think through the form on my own terms. The drawing has transformed in that process into something more me and not a direct study / copy.
I was never any good referencing hands from life. It's odd. Gestures, expressions? Sure. For some reason hands always looked like fat rubber gloves filled with sand. So I'm trying to break it down into something more understandable. Learning from a master I admire is helping . If you have any tips, totally throw them at me. I may not act on all of them, but I love hearing how people work. As an aspiring teacher, I also appreciate knowing the many different ways in which people think about art, form, and the structure of drawing.
