If you're familiar with the film Oddball, than you'd know that Middle Island in southern Australia is an important breeding ground for the adorable little penguin and that it is constantly threatened by foxes who cross over from the mainland at low tide. But, if you've seen it then you'd also know that the penguins have a unique and very effective deterrent for them varmints, Maremma sheepdogs!
Still, it seems that feisty fox Ravo is happy to take his chances if it means gobbling up a tasty penguin. Well...he was happy to, until he came face to face with one of them good boys themselves! Interestingly, it seems that for some foxes, like Ravo here, these dogs work not because they're intimidating, but because they're so damn adorable!! XD
This was partially inspired by the time I got to pet some Maremmas at university. They were there to help students de-stress, and boy do they do their job well! :D They truly are wonderful dogs and their ability to protect critters without the need for bloodshed is really heartwarming <3
