I wouldn't consider it a huge deal to not know about the different LOTR animations.
In fact, for a few of them it's most likely a good thing that you never find out about them, such as the bakshi film.
I love the representaion! I don't quite remember the ears being so pronounced, but, i haven't seen the movie in ages, and it doesn't really bother me anyways.

Ahh....I watched this when it first aired on TV (and was sponsored by IBM which had an awesome commercial showing an artist drawing a scene showing two cliffs with crowds standing on them...and a bridge connecting them together....and he drew it in one, continuous line). When I bought the DVD a few years ago, I was sorely disappointed to find that there was an entire portion of the sound effects track missing. Most notable when they're in the trees ("Fifteen Birds"), Gandalf grabs a pine cone, charges it with power and throws it down.....where it explodes with no sound. And when the eagles dive in to save them....no sound of their screech from the original. And no sound of Smaug's breath weapon... Probably a mastering problem.
Sorry...got somewhat off-topic there. Like many above, as soon as I saw the thumbnail, I instantly knew who this was. You've done a fantastic job on this!!
"Is it niiice, my precious? Is it juicyyyy...is it gooeyyyy....is it...scrumptious?"
Well bust my boilers! I'm quite pleased indeed to see I'm not the only one who enjoyed that design! I love how manic but exhausted this version seemed in his voice as opposed the the constant pep in the newer one! Don't get me wrong, both designs were neat and horrific in their own ways, but Gollum was very very old, kept alive by the ring through unnatural means. The somewhat more low key way of speaking the animated had really helped sell it for me. I also really liked the concept that he had been not only withered but corrupted so extensively by that evil magic that he became something other , that he had become this sort of devolved lizard thing. I found that idea to be a very unique and fascinating concept and made him all the more unsettling yet at the same time morbidly interesting! The idea of humanity being eroded away and what might be left is a rather interesting thing to ponder and explore, this design actually sparks the imagination in that regard. The more lizardy appearance helps show off the more monstrous effects of the ring and the reptilian choice help convey subtly a sort of cruelty that one imagines in regards to a lizard brain. Furthermore, the dull eyes that seemed almost wholly unfunctional and showed that he'd been in those caves for so long that he was losing the ability to inhabit anywhere else, sort of like those cave lizards, made him further unsettling! You did a wonderful job with this picture and a great credit to that old gem! lol I'll admit I only recently began looking over clips of it, but it looks like in it's hay-day it would've been a great movie!
